Pilgrim Tour - «Georgian Sanctuaries»

Georgia since ancient times is a deeply religious country. Despite the enormous reverence for Christianity, people in Georgia are very tolerant and with due respect refer for other religions. In Georgia, there is a huge number of monasteries, churches and holy places that tourists can visit.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at Tbilisi International Airport, transfer to a hotel, overnight.

Day 2: Tbilisi

Sightseeing tour of Old Tbilisi, a charming town built along the twisting valley of the Mtkvari River. Start the tour in Old Tbilisi at the 13th century Metekhi church, with the equestrian statue of the city’s royal founder standing above the steep cliffs of the Mtkvari River. The church has been destroyed many times by the enemy. During the Tsarist regime there was a prison there. Continue to 7th century Sioni Cathedral, it is considered one of the most sacred places in the country, since it houses the holy cross of St Nino, the young woman who converted Georgia to Christianity in the early 4th century; Sioni was the only active church during Soviet Occupation. We visit 6th century Anchiskhati Basilica, the oldest church in the town. Afterwards a car will take us up to 4th century Narikala Fortress; from there you can enjoy picturesque panoramic view of Tbilisi. Then we walk to the brick-domed Sulfur Baths houses. Afterwards the car will take us to the church of St. David and the Pantheon, the burial place of Georgian writers, poets, musicians, painters, public figures etc.

Day 3: Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Ubisa- Kutaisi

In the morning we visit the ancient capital of Georgia Mtskheta, situated at the confluence of the Aragvi and the Mtkvari rivers; Mtskheta is the site of the first Christian churches in Georgia. We visit Jvari Monastery (6th century), located at the top of the hill. This is the place where the missionary St Nino erected a cross (“jvari” in Georgian) in the 4th century to mark the coming of Christianity to Georgia. We visit 11th century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, used for centuries for the coronation and burial of Georgian monarchs. Most importantly, it is considered one of the holiest places in Georgia, since the Robe of Christ is buried here. Svetitskoveli is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Georgia, with exquisite carvings and frescoes. We continue towards western Georgia, on rout visit Ubisa Church, (9th century) –modest single-nave basilica, with some of the best frescoes in Georgia. They were painted in the 14th century and reveal the Byzantine influence, although they were executed by the Georgian artist Damiane. The complex also encloses a four-storey dwelling tower added in the 12th century. Arrive in Kutaisi, the land of Golden Fleece.

Day 4: Kutaisi-Zugdidi-Martvili-Kutaisi

In the morning we drive to beautiful region of Samegrelo and visit Cathedral of the Assumption of Maria , which is one of the oldest cathedrals in Georgia , dated VI - VII centuries. Domed building built in XII - XIV centuries before existed on this site , built in the X - XI centuries simple " aisles " church. For centuries Tsaish Cathedral was one of the educational centers of the country. One of the oldest buildings of the cathedral is the so -called "chamber ", located behind the wall and to the east of it. It may be related to the XI century. Zugdidi treasure is graceful patrimonial castle Dadiani , with its unique park. Dadian - an ancient aristocratic family known for its connection with Napoleon Bonaparte. Dadian family palace , today is a museum, which exhibited extraordinary historical collection . However, the main place among the exhibits takes tunic Dame, brought here from Constantinople after its fall in 1453. Museum surrounds the park, head of the family planted Dadiani. The park covers an area of 67 hectares. Here you can find imported from different parts of the world , unique trees . Dinner . Next we go to Martvili . Martvili look around - the one with the most popular destinations in the region. Here is located the canyon - a unique place for its type . Canyon striking beauty of nature - rocks , overgrown with vegetation, crystal clear water of the river . This is where we will stop to enjoy a boat ride on the river canyon and enjoy the incredible scenery. Picnic in the nature. Return to Kutaisi. Accommodation at the hotel.

Day 5: Kutaisi-Uplistsikhe-Tbilisi

Breakfast at hotel. In the morning we visit the Gelati monastery complex, which was founded by King David the Builder in the 11th century . The complex also includes Gelati Academy, which was not only a sense of the church lives, but concentrate and psychological thinking and the center of general education. Next we will visit one of the newest attractions and natural monument of Georgia - Prometheus cave (another name Kumistavi ) . Tour of the grotto is accompanied by sound and light effects, creating a superb atmosphere inside the halls of films. At the end of the tour route through the cave, you can continue with the tour boat ride on the underground river. Drive to Tbilisi. On the way visit Uplistsikhe caves town - one of the oldest places in the Caucasus, which were founded in the Bronze Age . The first mention of Uplistsikhe occurs even in the annals of I century BC. i. e. history of the town was full and ambiguous - it has experienced several ups and downs and finally was abandoned in the XIX century. The city is known for its unique rooms, tunnels, rooms and many others. After the adoption of Christianity in Georgia, were built several churches. For centuries it served as the royal center and commercial crossroads Kartli. After the tour heading to Tbilisi. Accommodation at the hotel and dinner. Overnight at hotel.

Day 6: Tbilisi-Bodbe-Sighnaghi-Tbilisi

Breakfast at hotel. A journey to Kakheti - the most important wine-growing region of Georgia. Visit Bodbe monastery, which takes a special place in the spiritual life of Georgia. The church holds relics of St. Nino enlightener. There is a one of the most famous icons of Georgia - Virgin " Iver ". During the World War II the monastery was used as a hospital. Nurses and some patients have secretly prayed before the image , accidentally preserved in the former church, but the authorities found out about it , rugged face of the Mother of God with a scalpel. However, people still preserved icon, glorified multiple healings. At 3 km from the monastery are the holy springs of St. Nino. At the bottom of the church arranged a pool, where you can bathe. Proceed to wonderful town of Sighnaghi where winding streets and architecture of the 18th century create a charming atmosphere. From the slopes of the hill on which is Sighnaghi, offers a magnificent view of the Alazani Valley with its orderly rows of vineyards. Dinner. In the evening return to Tbilisi. Accommodation at the hotel . Dinner and overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 7: Tbilisi

Breakfast at hotel. Visiting Patriarchate and Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Art which keeps an important part of the Georgian shrines. Wine tasting at Georgian wine factory. Leisure time and dinner in the evening. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 8: Departure

Transfer from the hotel to Tbilisi international airport and departure.
