Sioni Cathedral

One of the most ancient and definitely the most well-known temple of Georgia - is Sion, or alternatively, Sioni Cathedral. And even with its great status, it was an example of modesty and moderation. Cathedral is constructed in V-VII centuries. The temple is as old as the city and lived through all the joys and sorrows that befell Tbilisi.

In fact, it isn’t possible to determine exactly when the construction of the temple has begun. Some refer the idea of building to the city's founder Vakhtang Gorgasali, others consider that the construction started with the king Guarame. But one thing is known for sure - the erection of the cathedral finished in the first half of VII century. It received its name in honor of Jerusalem's Sion. Besides Sion, there are still many places with the same name in Georgia, but it is the best known.

During its rich history the temple was destroyed and restored again. It had to survive the intrusion of the Mongols, Persians, Byzantines, Khorezm, and many others. Traces of these events were saved on the walls of the church.

Going through the centuries and epochs, architecture of the temple has not altered a lot - it also kept its strict Catholic identity, and only a traditional Georgian building is crowned by a cupola. Inside the ornament is a mixture of different periods, beginning from the XVII century to the present days.

It also keeps the cross of St. Nino - the holy of Georgia. The woman accepted Christianity on the Georgian land, and its cross is a symbol of asceticism believer - it is made from two grape vines, and woven by her hair.

Sioni Cathedral became a symbol of faith and persistence of the Georgian people. And while it stands Tbilisi also will stand.
